その中には19世紀中期に遡るものもあります。「宝石の街」を意味するラートナプラとバランゴダは、スリランカの宝石鉱山の大半を占めており、ほとんどの宝石をラートナプラとバランゴダ地域から調達しています。

また、スリランカのカラーストーンは、市民鉱山と技能を磨いた職人たちによって生み出されています。RURIでは、スリランカの宝石産業を支えるコミュニティと連帯するため、宝石の販売価格を原産地に開示し、販売代金の1/4～1/2をスリランカに還元しています。
